Chapter 2: A Motor Home Lemon Story
Their vehicle had what is called a slide-out, a room in the motor home that extends outward on rails to create more space inside the coach. The slide-out had several associated defects:
- Sometimes when they turned a corner, the slide-out extended on its own. This was very frightening, and certainly a safety issue.
- The bad fit of the slide-out allowed sand and dust to enter the motor home.
- The slide-out tore the interior carpet near the sides.
- Because there were bad seals around the slide-out, there were air leaks and an unpleasant whistling noise whenever they were on the highway.
This is a typical list. We've certainly seen worse.
The RV had a number of other problems:
- The shower doors stuck and couldn’t be opened.
- The rearview mirrors were damaged.
- There were numerous trim defects (paint, molding, drawer handles, etc.).

Mr. and Mrs. Rodriguez called the coach manufacturer, who gave them the names of the nearest authorized repair facilities. However, unlike automobiles, motor homes don’t have dealerships and repair facilities in every city and town. There were no repair facilities close to Van Horn, Texas, so they had a choice: an independent shop in Abilene, or a dealership in Dallas.
